Riding the Quantum Wave With Immersive

Immersive launches new hands-on quantum computing labs to celebrate NVIDIA’s Quantum Day
Quantum computing has the opportunity to fundamentally change a number of industries. From finance to healthcare, quantum technology is set to solve entire classes of problems that classical computers struggle with. Major tech companies, governments, and researchers are investing heavily in quantum hardware and software, recognizing that we are entering a new era of computing. In celebration of NVIDIA's Quantum Day (March 20th, 2025), Immersive is taking a leap forward, launching a series of hands-on quantum computing labs designed to empower computer scientists to navigate this exciting frontier.
Back in the early days of computing, machines like the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) took up entire rooms, filled with vacuum tubes, relays, and miles of wiring. These behemoths required extensive cooling, had limited processing power, and consumed massive amounts of electricity. The ENIAC, for example, weighed around 27 tons, occupied 1,800 square feet, and could perform about 5,000 operations per second – a fraction of what even a basic smartphone can do today.
As technology progressed, transistors replaced vacuum tubes, leading to the miniaturization of computers. This trend continued with the development of integrated circuits and then microprocessors, making it possible for computers to fit on desks, in pockets, and even inside wearable devices.
Now, with quantum computing, we’re seeing a different kind of computational revolution. Quantum computers aren’t just another iteration of smaller and faster traditional computers; they operate on entirely different principles – leveraging quantum bits (qubits) instead of classical bits. However, like early classical computers, today's quantum machines are still large and unwieldy.
For instance:
- IBM’s Quantum System One is enclosed in a 9-foot-tall glass and steel case
- Google’s Sycamore quantum processor is housed in a complex cryogenic setup
- D-Wave’s quantum annealer requires a dilution refrigerator to keep it near zero (-273°C)
This is reminiscent of the vacuum tube era of classical computing, where machines were room-sized due to technological limitations. However, just as classical computers shrank over decades, quantum computers may follow a similar trajectory.
We’re currently in an interesting time for quantum computing, and we could be witnessing the start of a new era of computing, just like in the 1940s.
